The materials most commonly chosen for drymounting are described below:
Foam Board
A soft surface material which has a neater finish than gator board. Black
foam board is extremely popular because it "frames" the mount for
an attractive look without adding to the cost. A word of caution: Because
foam board absorbs humidity, it can warp. Therefore, it's ideal for smaller
mounts or mounts which will be used the same day, but it is not recommended
for large mounts which must be used repeatedly. A wide variety of colors is
available.
Gator Board
A premium hard surface mounting material. Because of its exceptional stiffness,
it's ideal for larger mounts. The edges of gator board mounts are not as crisp
as foam board mounts due to the rigidity of the material.
Illustration Board
A paper surface mount. Some people refer to illustration board as "museum
board" because of its popularity in framing application, its fine finish,
and its rich appearance.
Komatex
A high density, very strong and rigid PVC material. Because Komatex is flexible,
yet rigid, it's often used in trade show booth displays. A wide variety of
colors are available.
Card Stock
110 lb. index stock (approximately 1/64" thick) is used for small prints
or larger prints that are to be framed. If the mount is not framed, then it
is best suited for short-term applications.
Chip Board
Slightly more rigid than card stock, chip board (approximately 1/32"
thick) is also excellent for small prints with short-term applications.
